THE
FUNCTIONAL TOOL TRAP :
Decisions
to choose and implement functional tools have
structural implications, be it for IT, HR or
other key corporate resources. We all remember
examples of ERP implementations which froze
organisations in a very expensive electronic concrete, partly because the
decision process had been carried
out at functional and not strategic
level.
It is an
obvious but often ignored necessity,
before making the final decision to launch projects which will alter the organisation
of key corporate resources, to assess their strategic
alignment, and to evaluate all potential consequences
on the existing organisation and processes.
Such
assessment is better performed by people
of experience with unbiased views, and
people who are not acting as salesmen
for
solutions suppliers.
SOUND ASSESSMENT
SKILLS AND PRACTICE :
Saint George Institute has developed
a powerful assessment practice,
based on cross analyses along five axes,
using questionnaires, individual interviews and
workshops :
Alignment
between business processes, functional tools, and
strategy,
Performance
and risk analysis,
Infrastructure
analysis,
Cost
and investments analysis, together with budget process,
Relationship
with other parts of the organisation, internal
clients involvement
and satisfaction level
.
This
assessment method enables
us to cross check essential information
and to highlight some aspects which employees sometimes
underestimate.
Our assessment
experience encompasses :
Information
Systems,
Purchasing
and Procurement,
Human
Resources,
Organisational
Development and Career Management.
